Five Tips for Landing Your Dream Internship

My time with Curley & Pynn as an intern has come to an end, so I’d like to offer some tips for students or recent graduates looking to land a fabulous internship (hopefully this one!).

  1. Personalize your online profiles – and keep them clean.

I guarantee employers will “Google” your name during the application process, so make sure that your online profiles are clean and informative.  And, after you land the internship or job, keep updating your online presence.  Your profiles should be an authentic display of your character both in and out of the office.

  1. Try something outside your comfort zone.

Prior to joining the C&P team, I was sure I never wanted to work at an agency.  Silly me.  This was, in part, because I was nervous that I would be overwhelmed with work and deadlines.  But nerves are good – a sign that what you are doing is important.  Turns out, I really enjoyed the agency environment.  In just four months, I was exposed to a broad range of essential PR skills, from writing and research to media outreach, and those skills were applied in several different PR sectors, from high tech to tourism.  So, challenge yourself.  Walk the edge.  Diversify.  Only then, will you succeed.

  1. Pay attention to the details.

C&P juggles many client projects, which is why efficiency is important.  Before submitting them to your supervisor, make sure first drafts are as close to final as possible.  That means fact-checking your information and triple-checking your grammar and punctuation.  The same applies to internship or job application materials – it’s not a great reflection of your skills if your resume and cover letter are full of typos.

  1. Go above and beyond.

Whether you’re assigned a project at work or an assignment at school, always give 101 percent. That extra 1 percent is a testament to your effort, dedication and passion, and will set you apart when applying to top internships and jobs.

  1. Network.  Network.  Network.

Those co-workers and colleagues who were impressed with your work?  Yeah, they’re going to be the people recommending you for the next opportunity.  While you might have the qualifications, nothing beats the recommendation of a former supervisor to help you land the job.  Leverage your network of school and internship contacts to learn more about possible opportunities.  The PR industry in Orlando is a small world.

These tips have served me well in securing five internships along the way to pursuing my bachelor’s degree in advertising and public relations from the University of Central Florida.  As my journey continues with just two more semesters to complete, the next step is to determine which career path I’ll pursue.

After experiencing this internship program, C&P might just be part of my path.

The last four months I’ve spent at C&P have exceeded all my expectations.  I’m leaving this internship as a better communicator, all because of the incredible (and quirky) team here.


How to Be the Best Intern Ever

As someone who was once a nervous, timid intern, I’ll admit—internships can be somewhat terrifying.  Your professors constantly stress the importance of getting multiple internships, but the process of seeking and obtaining those internships can sometimes feel overwhelming.

If you’ve ever felt this way, take a deep breath and relax.  Internships are a process of trial and error—they’re designed to help you learn what you like and don’t like, all while getting real-world experience.  And as employers, we’re here to help you grow, and that’s something we love to do.

Here at Curley & Pynn, interns are a valuable part of our team who get to work on all kinds of projects—drafting newsletters, doing research, building media lists and more.  Now, you might be thinking, “That sounds awesome, but what exactly do you look for in an intern?”  Luckily for you, I am here to answer that very question.  Here are five things that make a great C&P intern:

  • Write.  And then write some more.

But seriously … writing is a vital skill in our industry.  As an intern at C&P (and in your future jobs), you will be writing on a consistent basis. Whether it’s a news release, feature story or a media pitch, you must have strong writing skills and know how to tailor your writing to very specific audiences.  If writing isn’t exactly your strong suit, practice!  It’ll go a long way in helping you stand out during your interview.

  • Be a sponge.

Once you’ve landed the internship, be eager to learn all you can.  Observe what others do, take notes, ask to sit in on meetings and seek out advice. We are here to be a resource for you, so don’t be shy.  You can learn a great deal by observing and asking questions.

  • Be a problem solver.

In the PR industry, you will undoubtedly face challenges that require you to think critically.  You may have to do difficult research for a client or write about a topic with which you’re unfamiliar.  In those cases, be resourceful and attempt to work through the problem you’re facing.  But if you get stuck after trying, don’t be afraid to ask questions.

  • View mistakes as a learning opportunity.

Everyone makes mistakes.  It’s an unavoidable reality.  You’ll make mistakes as an intern, and you’ll make mistakes as a seasoned industry pro.  But guess what … that’s OK.  Mistakes may not be pleasant in the moment, but they can be a valuable learning opportunity.  When your internship supervisor offers constructive criticism, view it as a positive.  We want to help you grow and succeed.

  • Take initiative.

One of the most valuable things you can do as an intern is take initiative. If there’s a project you want to get involved with, tell us.  If there’s something you want to learn more about, speak up.  If you don’t have enough work to do, ask for more.  We do our best to get our interns involved in a variety of projects, but we always like when our interns take the initiative to ask first.

Interns are People, Too

The value of interns cannot be overstated.  We’ve had an active internship program at Curley & Pynn since, well, nearly the beginning.  And, in my (almost) 12 years here, I’ve watched as a select few have made a direct path from intern to full-time employee.

While I acknowledge that many internships must consist of making coffee, picking up dry cleaning and generally handling menial tasks like something out of “The Devil Wears Prada” that surely doesn’t reflect the experience we try to create.  Learning is a critical part, but real-world experiences are essential.

If the same is true elsewhere, I wonder, then, why I continue to see emails from “intern@XYZcompany.” If an intern is tasked with communicating with the media, for instance, how much credibility does their “intern@” email address have?

Don’t get me wrong, we’re not in the business of passing off interns as seasoned pros, but we are in the business of creating real opportunities and interns are people, too.


What a Time to Be a Top Grad

It is intern time again … and companies in every field are entertaining fresh-faced college kids (many about to graduate into a scary world) who want one last shot to learn real-world skills as interns.

Some may be wishing they could put their thumb in the commencement exercise dike.

But the smartest will say “let me mop the floors so I can show you I’m the hottest thing since sliced bread.”

Smart businesses will snap them up and turn their internships into boot camp experiences … risking a few bucks perhaps on more than one intern to have the pick of the crop because they will be your best staff a year from now as things are turning around. They won’t cost as much up front and they’ll know more than most of the folks you employ today.
