Are you walking in the woods?
We call this blog “taking aim” because for more than two decades we’ve been fascinated with a quote from the most celebrated bow and arrow hunter of all time … and how his admonition applies to all we do as strategic communicators. Howard Hill– a tough guy who even hunted elephants with his medieval weapon – said:
“Unless you know your game’s feeding, sleeping and daily habits, unless you plan your hunt in great detail and follow your plan with precision, you are not hunting at all … you’re just walking in the woods.”
We remind ourselves every day that without planning the work we do for our clients in great detail … without knowing everything there is to know about their organizations and those who have an interest in them, we’re not really ready to let the arrow fly.
In an age where there are so many people wandering through these woods and when arrows cost so much, it is essential to follow Hill’s advice, lest we waste arrows … or even worse … hit the wrong target.
