So Much for Privacy

ktaylorby Kim Taylor

How often do you check your privacy settings on Facebook?  If you’re like me, the answer is probably “not often enough.”   I was sure my Facebook activity was limited to my “Friends” until I hovered over a status update last week and saw it was Public.  Sure enough, my privacy settings were set to “Public.”

Curious how this happened, I did some research on Facebook’s privacy settings.  Like others, I was puzzled as to why my settings kept reverting back to Public.  Finally, after troubleshooting a few possibilities, I discovered that even with my privacy settings set to “Friends,” the Check In feature on Facebook was “Public.”

According to Lifehacker, privacy settings of future posts are adjusted each time you post.  So, one Public Check In could ultimately set all future posts to Public.

In other words, you can set your privacy settings to whatever you choose, but ultimately you need to adjust this each time you post.

It’s easy to be frustrated about Facebook’s seemingly sneaky attempts at making your information more accessible when you’d prefer it not to be, but then I remember this fun adage:

If you’re not paying for the product, you ARE the product.
