The Click Trick

In Florida, severe weather headlines grab attention.  When you see the words “tropical storm,” memories of past visitors like Donna, Andrew, Charley and Sandy are unavoidable.  If you’re seeing those words online, you do one thing immediately:  click.

And so when you clicked a headline from last Friday that said “Tropical Storm Ingrid poses severe flood threat,” you may have wondered why … or perhaps uttered a nasty word, when you realized you’d been duped into boosting traffic ratings for the local paper only to find out that “Ingrid poses severe flood threat to Mexico.”

Interestingly, weather television weathercasters were unanimous:  Ingrid poses absolutely no threat to the U.S.
